Our Makers
Lovely Paper only works with top quality, small batch producers from around the world. Our makers are often designers or artists who print their own work on vintage print presses, that are hundreds of years old.
There’s a number of criteria we consider in selecting our suppliers to make sure we get the very best for you.
Small producers, small businesses: Our makers are also small businesses, who are keeping the art and craft of letterpress alive. They produce only small batches of cards, so you won’t find them stocked in lots of retail stores or chains in Australia. This means we can bring you unique cards and unique designs.
People behind the prints: We want to show you the people who print and design the beautiful cards that Lovely Paper brings you. All our makers do the hard yards themselves, and spend their days operating and tending to presses that are hundreds of years old.
Special places: Lovely Paper’s suppliers are from places that Bea has a personal connection to. Our first makers hail from Ireland, like Bea, East Anglia, where she went to university, and Australia, the place that’s now home to Lovely Paper. She also holds cards from some of her favourite places to travel to, Hawaii and California.
Introducing our makers
Ireland: The Pear in Paper
Lynn is a letterpress printer and artist based in Donegal, Ireland. In 2015, she set up a studio to create unique stationery and linoprints, and the following year, restored ‘Florrie’ her trusted 1872 platen press. Florrie is operated manually, by foot, no electricity or automation in sight.
Lynn is passionate about the environment, so she takes an eco-friendly approach to her practice. She prints on tree-free cotton card, uses recycled paper for her envelopes and packages each card with compostable corn starch sleeves.
In Lynn’s words, “Florrie and I are a great team, a force to be reckoned with. She prints with such precision and grace. Every day, the smell of ink, the whizz of the fly wheel, the ‘ding’ as the rollers ink the plate are little reminders of why I love what I do and why we all should fight for our dreams.”
Australia: D&D Letterpress
Doug and Danika fell in love with letterpress when they rescued and revived Wendy, a 1923 Chandler and Price, and D&D Letterpress was born. They’re a dream team, with Danika looking after production and design while Doug gets his hands dirty on the presses. They run D&D Letterpress from country New South Wales, where they’re ably assisted by their design consultant Brittney, three presses alongside Wendy, their two children and beloved press dog, Huxley.
Danika and Doug love both design and the hand-crafted, and their work demonstrates both their attention to detail and to quality. Their beautiful cards feature both design and illustrations, and are printed on 100% cotton paper stock with premium quality envelopes.
